Renate Rendedal

Born and raised in Balestrand, Renate is a real Fjording, which is what we call those people that live in Fjordane, the area outside Balestrand town centre. With her small family and close to her parents Renate enjoys a life on the Rendedal farm in Vetlefjorden, which is around 25km east of Balestrand. When I met her, she was cutting down some trees together with her father Olav Kåre while her small kids Trygve and Oline where playing in the snow.

Renate er født og oppvaksen i Balestrand, og er en ekte Fjording. Det er ka vi kaller folk som bor i Fjordane, området utenfor Balestrand sentrum. Med lille familie hennes og i nærheten av foreldrene nyter Renate et liv på Rendedal gården i Vetlefjorden, som ligger rundt 25 km øst for Balestrand. Da jeg møtte henne, hugget hun nokre trær sammen med faren Olav Kåre mens dei små barna Trygve og Oline leikte og koste seg i snøen.

This is me
I grew up in Balestrand and was born in 1980. I moved away when I was 16 years old to the small city Sogndal, which is around 45 km away from Balestrand. There I attended college, before I moved on to Trondheim in the north and then to Bergen where I worked on one of the Color Line boats for 10 years. In 2010 I moved back home to the hamlet of Vetlefjord, outside of Balestrand to run the family farm I grew up on. Now I live on the Rendedal farm together with my family, which includes my fiance Bård Kjetil, our children Trygve, 6 years and Oline, who is 4 years old. The non human population living here with us are 80 sheep, 15 chicken and one dog.

Eg er oppvaksen i Balestrand, eg vart født i 1980. Flytta når eg var 16 år til Sogndal, en by i nærheten til studering på videregående, før eg for videre til Trondheim, Bergen og hatt jobben min i på Color Line sine båter i 10 år. Flytta heim til bygda Vetlefjorden ca 2010 for å drive familiegarden. Bur her no på Rendedal Gård med familien min, forloveden min Bård Kjetil, barna våre Trygve 6 år og Oline 4 år. Vi alle bur her sammen med 80 sauer, 15 høner og 1 hund.
Education and Income
I am educated in both tourism and agronomy and I now work with the sheep on the farm, grow vegetables and have chickens in my garden. I am also a consultant for Doterra, selling and training others in how to use essential oils.
It is my fiancé who currently brings in the main income for our family, he is a carpenter by trade and has his own carpentry company.

Driv no med sauer, grønnsaker og høner på garden. Eg er også konsulent for doterra, med salg og opplæring i bruk av eteriske oljer.
Det er mannen min som har hovudinntekta for familien, han har eigen snekkerfirma.
The Good and the Bad
The 3 most wonderful things of living here are: the nature and landscape, the crisp clear air in the fall and winter and not having to worry about car queues.
3 most difficult things are also nature - with avalanches and the insecurity we experience when the weather is bad, the distance to the shops, the school and activities, and actually I cannot think of a lot more.

How a normal day looks like
This really depends on the season. In the winter months I mostly work inside. I care for the animals inside the barn, work with the Doterra oils I am selling, I do my accounting, make plans and goals for the next weeks and months. We often use this time of the year for some DIY on our farm house, which was built in 1880. And, besides all the work I get some fresh air with snowmobiling and chopping wood.
When spring arrives, it's time for us to work longer days outside. The grass requires fertilisers, the sheep are having their lambs - that is the time I will be midwife and nanny at the same time. It is a busy time where our animals will go out to pasture while we need to keep the fences in order, and plant our plants which we aim to harvest later in the year.
And, outside of the general plans, it is often my children who decide a little the daily rhythm we are able to take.
But in general, a perfect day starts for me at 6am after a good night's sleep. The whole family will then have breakfast, and I have a morning routine with some essential oils. Then a coffee and we are all ready for the day`s chores.
Usually the children will then go to the kindergarten, which is located around 10km away from where we live. In that time they are away I choose the least child-friendly and most dangerous work tasks of the day. On the weekends, however I like the kids to be involved here on the farm as much as possible, so they learn how to work and join me- but I also let them get bored when we adults must work, as I feel this stimulates their creativity.
Of course everything takes a lot longer when they join me, so they sometimes get very tired, but that is the way it is. :)
I pick up the kids no later than 15-16 in the afternoon and we prepare dinner together. We then often go outside and take care of the animals or play a little.
When my fiancé Bård arrives back home after work, either him or I usually go out to work a bit more once we had dinner. While one of us is outside, the other is then playing with the kids and puts them to bed, while tidying up everything inside. But Bård and I always make sure to have 1-2 nights a week where we don't work late in the evenings, so we have time together from 21 and watch a series and eat chips.
This year Bård Kjetil has been working the whole week, left the house on Monday morning and returned on Thursday or Friday - in these weeks I cannot leave the house after the children have gone to bed. It would have probably been ideal to do some paperwork then, but I am a morning person - so I am way too tired at night to be efficient and concentrated.
On those evenings housewife tasks are waiting for me then instead. ;)
En vanleg dag for meg er
Det er veldig sesongbestemt, vinterhalvåret har eg mest innearbeid. Steller dyra inne i fjøset. Jobbar med doterra, rekneskap, planar og mål, og kanskje litt utbedringer av huset fra 1880. Og så får eg lufta meg med snømåking og hogge ved.
Når våren kjem er det tid for lange dager ute med arbeid. Graset skal ha gjødsel, sauene får lam - då får eg hovudtittel som jordmor og barnepleier, dyra skal ut på beite og då må gjerdene være i orden, plantene skal plantes.
Foruten dei generelle planene er det barna som bestemmer litt døgnrytmen.
Ein perfekt dag starter kl 6 etter ei god natts søvn, familien skal ha frokost og eg treng min morgenrutine med eteriske oljer. Kaffi og så er vi klar for dagens gjøremål.
Til vanlig er barna i barnehagen, då velger eg dei minst barnevennlige/mest farlige arbeidsoppgåvene på dagen. I helgene liker eg at barna er med på det meste, for å lære seg å jobbe - men og kjede seg når vi voksne jobber, for å vekke kreativiteten.
Men alt tar mykje lenger tid når dei er med, og dei blir av og til veldig lei :)
Eg henter barna seinest 15-16 tida på ettermiddagen og lager middag. Vi går gjerne ut sammen alle og steller dyra eller leiker litt.
Når forloveden min er heime går gjerne eg eller han ut å jobber etter middag/på kvelden. Medan den andre legger og passer barna/tar innearbeid. Men vi passer på å ha 1-2 kvelder i veka der vi tar FRI sammen fra 21 og ser en serie og eter chips.
Bård Kjetil har dette året vore på arbeid heile veka, reist mandag og kommet tilbake torsdag/fredag - så då kan eg ikkje gå ut av huset etter barna har lagt seg. Det ideelle hadde vert å tatt papirarbeid da, men eg er eit morgenmenneske - så er alt for trøtt på kvelden til å være effektiv og konsentrert. Men husmor-oppgavene venter gjerne på meg da ;)
